Water fuels the wetland and grassland ecosystems on which the ship of North America's waterfowl population floats. This spring, that ship is aground on a bone-dry-and-getting-drier Texas, and any chance resident ducks might have had of a successful nesting season has evaporated along with the water in freshwater marshes, swamps, prairie ponds and reservoirs.
